The Beginning of Modern Police in Ethiopia
Various historical documents indicate that the organization and introduction of modern police services in our country spans many years. Ethiopia's modern police force was formally established by proclamation on January 23, 1934 E.C. (1942 G.C.).
Ethiopia's police organization, which began under various names such as Arada Zebagna, City Guard, and Wardia, maintained a paramilitary structure until 1948 E.C. Historical records show that during this period, urban police utilized available technology including vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles, while rural areas employed horses, mules, and camels to carry out police duties.
🏛️ Sidama Police Formation and Development
History tells us that following the fall of the Derg regime, Sidama Police began providing services under the Transitional Government starting from June 14, 1984 E.C. Following the ratification of the FDRE Constitution in 1987 E.C., within the administrative structure of the former Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Regional State, the Sidama Zone Administration Police Department was formally established according to the constitution.
Within this structure, operating under the name Sidama Zone Police Department and coordinating with security forces at various levels, the institution continued to fulfill its role of maintaining public peace and security.
📌 Key Event:- Following the positive response of the reform government to the Sidama people's demand for regional statehood, a referendum was held on November 10/2012 E.C. resulting in Sidama becoming the 10th Regional State. Subsequently, through Proclamation No. 7/2012 E.C., the Sidama Regional Police Commission was formally established, transitioning from the former zonal structure.
